Dates in Newark History1666 - 1699February, 1666 - Captain Robert Treat visits Achter Koll regarding Newark Bay May 21, 1666 - Preliminary town meeting on board ship near Elizabethtown May 28, 1666 - Meeting between settlers and Indians to purchase land May 20, 1668 - Commissioners of the Town of Newark and Elizabethtown met at "Divident Hill," to fix the boundaries between the settlements. January 1669 - Thomas Johnson becomes the first Constable 1670 - Newark's first hotel was opened in the home of Thomas Johnson, on the northeast corner of Broad and Walnut Streets. This is now the site of the Grace Episcopal Church. August 9, 1673 - Newark comes under Dutch control, 73 citizens took the oath to the Republic of Holland. September 13, 1673 - Population 86 men November 10, 1674 - Newark returns to English control February 6, 1677 - Protection of shade trees provided through marking with the letter N 1680 - The first shoemaker arrives, Samuel Whitehead 1682 - Population of approx. 500, with 10,000 acres of town lands and 40,000 acres of outlying plantations. 1683 - The first poor person was provided for. 1695 -The first saw mill was opened. 1698 - The first tannery was established by Azariah Crane.
